From the first episode of Season Four of BET’s hit gospel talent competition program, Sunday Best, Andrea Helms was a fan favorite. Now, months later, Andrea Helms releases her debut album, titled Moving Forward, with tunes that again share her sincere heart for worship.
This seven-track EP presents a solid handful of re-recorded versions of the same songs that catapulted Helms to the runner-up spot of Sunday Best. For example, the project’s lead single, “Yesterday,” was already a crowd-pleaser when Helms first delivered it to a spiritually charged studio audience. Here, she again presents a reworked version of the now-classic tune first recorded by sister duo (and Sunday Best judges) Mary Mary.
Other standouts on Moving Forward include the worshipful title track, made popular by songwriters Ricardo Sanchez and Israel Houghton, and a traditional, organ-anchored rendition of Richard Smallwood’s “I Love the Lord,” made popular across the world by Whitney Houston. Helms also shines with impeccable vocal delivery on Donald Lawrence’s popular “Encourage Yourself.”
These days, the “15 minutes of fame” that finalists of TV shows typically receive can expire before the clock really starts. Andrea Helms, however, presents quite a unique artistry – a refreshingly honest approach to music ministry and the head-turning vocal chops to actually back it up. With Moving Forward, Andrea Helms demands our attention. And her album is good enough to receive it.
