How did it come about for you to play a role in the gmc gospel play, For Richer Or Poorer? I was asked by Keith Neal and Eric Tomosunas of Swirl Films. It was a honor and a blessing to be considered. My daughter, Kierra Sheard, did "The Love You Save" for them last year.
Was this your first acting experience? If so, what was it like? If not, what other roles have you played? Do you expect to take on more roles this year? This was not my first acting experience. I had small role in a black history film along with my sisters years ago, and I had a cameo in a then popular reality show years ago. I toured for a year with David Talbert's "Mr. Right Now" in the late '90s. I've also been in many other various gospel plays over the years. Most recently I toured for about a year and a half with Angela Barrow Dunlap's gospel stage play "Church Girl." The play was just recently filmed and released on DVD. I was also in the recent DVD film "Blessed & Cursed." My daughter Kierra was also in the film. (I played her mom.) It was a great experience. I definitely have developed a love for acting and I would love to do more television & film.
What does the message of the play mean to you? Were there any spiritual moments for you while acting the part? Well, being a married woman, I can definitely relate to the message of the play "For Richer or Poorer." My wonderful and incredible husband, Bishop Jdrew Sheard, the love of my life, and I have been through many ups and downs over our years together, but we've remained faithful and true to God and each other. Thankfully, through God's mercy and grace, He's allowed us to make it through every obstacle we've faced. I'm proud to say we've been happily married going on 28 years now! It's so important for couples out there, younger and older to understand that you must be sure to first have a strong, personal relationship with God and a firm foundation built upon His word before you can truly love one another the way God desires. The play reminded me how we all can sometimes lose our focus over the petty things, instead of keeping our focus on God and on the bigger picture. It also made me love and appreciate even more the great man of God the Lord has graciously given me!
Did you sing in the play? What role does music play in this story? Yes, I play the role of Rockmond Dunbar's mother, and in addition to acting the part, I sang the song "Blessings," a song from my current CD, All in One. The song provided ministry and encouragement at a necessary time when my son (in the play) was down and feeling hopeless in the situation he found himself in. I pray it will also bless your TV audience. The song speaks about how God will provide blessings behind any and every "closed door" that man considers final. We have to learn to continually lean and depend on the Lord and thank Him in the midst of every storm, knowing He'll absolutely brings us through it!
What is happening musically for you right now? I'm promoting my latest/current album, traveling and touring quite a bit. I also plan to deliver another new album on our family owned label, Karew Records, real soon! Stay tuned, y'all!
