gmc World Premiere Gospel Play: In Sickness and In Health

About Show

Sisters Faith and Hope are best friends. Hope, being 2 years older, has always been there for her sister, so naturally she has enjoyed helping her baby sister plan her dream wedding in Hawaii. Faith and Norman, who met in church, have dated for two years, been engaged for six months and plan to marry in two weeks. Yet, she has neglected to tell Norman one very important detail. Faith has sickle-cell anemia. During their courtship, she hadn’t had a pain crisis and since Norman’s job required him to travel, there never seemed to be an opportune time to discuss the disease with him. However with their wedding two weeks away, Faith’s sister Hope continued to pressure her to come clean to her future husband.

The dilemma was, Faith saw her father struggle to take care of her sick mother, who died of a sickle cell-related stroke, at the age of 40. At the time Faith was just fifteen, and she’d already had two blood transfusions. She vowed then, that she wouldn’t put anybody she loved through that, but when she met Norman, she honestly believed his love would heal her.   She hasn’t had a crisis in three years, and with her diet and exercise, her disease was under control. But, with the stress of her pending wedding, Faith was having several small pain crises. Instead of coming clean to Norman, she pushed him away. With his job, she felt he has no time to care for a sick wife, and convinced herself, that he was better off without her.

Norman, not understanding her strange behavior, reached out to Hope, who was forced to tell him the truth. Faith, livid with her sister, temporarily moved in with her father, Samuel, and when Norman came to visit, she revealed the entire truth and told him the engagement was officially off. Samuel, in a heart to heart with Norman, detailed the responsibility of marrying someone with an illness, and for the first time, Norman even questioned his degree of love and commitment to Faith.

Samuel, who was now dating for the first time since his wife’s death fifteen years ago, always taught his daughters to live fully and not in fear. Though he was still preaching this, he is struggling with his own words. Samuel was falling for Casey, but as his admiration for her grew, his heart reminisced the pain of losing his wife. He, in turn, pulled away for fear of ever experiencing that heartbreak again. Though he wanted to love again, it was much easier said than done.

After much prayer, Norman once again reached out to Faith and poured out his heart. She still refused to agree to marriage, but within days finally realized God’s plan for her included Norman and she would be foolish to deny herself of this blessing. She hoped it wasn’t too late to apologize and go forth with the wedding, but there was no way, she could finish the preparation for the elaborate wedding that was supposed to take place in Hawaii. Therefore, Hope secretly helped Norman re-plan a small ceremony at the house with a few family members. When Faith visited to apologize for her actions, she had no idea that he was there waiting to say his vows.
