Above the Golden State's self-titled debut released in late July. The music video for the first single, "Sound of Your Name," world premiered on Gospel Music Channel last week. Lead singer Michael Watson chatted with by phone from New York City about the making of the video.

There are quite a few people in the video. Who are they?

They are all friends of mine and people I know who go to my church, Solid Rock Church in Portland, Oregon. The best thing about [the video] is it's all just friends. Even though it looks like complete strangers, I know everyone. The guy with the beard is a homeless guy we know. There are a lot of awesome people in the video. They are all just friends of mine. I'm not dating any of the girls. Everyone always asks that.

Where wasthe videoshot?

Downtown Portland. We shot on all the major bridges and down by Burnside, which is one of the major streets in the downtown area. It only took two or three days. It kept raining and then it stopped raining. Raining and stopped raining. (Typical Portland weather.) We almost would have preferred it if it had rained the whole time for the sake of consistency. After the final scene we had about 10 of us under one umbrella.

Any interesting facts about the band members or anyone else in the video?

Brook Mosser, our drummer, is a youth pastor. He and I are in the first scene of the video. He took my old job at Solid Rock church. He's been a great friend for about five years. He used to play drums and guitar for another band. Tim [Aylward, keys] is in a later section. Tim is a pretty amazing guy. I've known him for about three or four years. He's actually studying to be a doctor right now. He graduated from OSU. He is so soft-spoken and nice, he does triathlons, and he was recently asked to do some male modeling. He's a catch! They are both super Godly guys, of course – men who truly love Jesus.

The older couple is from England and moved out to the west coast not too long ago. They are marriage counselors at our church. The guy on the skateboard is a professional skateboarder – he does all those tricks and lands them all!

How was the song "Sound of Your Name" born and what's it about?

Four or five years ago I had kind of come to the end of my rope. Call it a burn out. I had just finished my time of working at our church in Portland. I had kind of forgotten that [as a Christian] your "job" is to enjoy Him. This song is kind of remembering that I can't do anything to save myself or anything on my own strength and I just have to rely on Jesus.
